Spring has Sprung!
Who says new resolutions are just for the New Year?
During Spring, new life is all around us, be it tiny lambs in the field or newly brightly blooming flowers in the garden. This got us thinking, what new habits can we bring into our daily lives? Seasonal resolutions to help us make the best of the whole year - not just January! We've chosen a single, simple one - get more sleep!
The Sleep Council says that “we all feel tired at times but it is important that it is not disruptive to your daily life and general health. It’s important not to get too hung up on your sleep quantity but focus on sleep quality instead.” Vicki Dawson, CEO and Founder of The Children’s Sleep Charity says, “Sleep issues significantly impacts on the mental, physical and emotional health of children and their families. Research shows that up to 40% of children will at some point experience a sleep issue. By ensuring that sleep support is available to those that need it we are confident that vast improvements will be seen in the nation’s health and wellbeing.”
The Children’s Sleep Charity launched its ‘Manifesto for Children and Young People’s Sleep’ in the Houses of Parliament at the end of 2017. It calls for a better understanding of sleep across the country to support the physical, emotional and mental wellbeing of families. I know that my family needs more sleep – what about yours?
“Is the spring coming?” he said. “What is it like?”
“It is the sun shining on the rain and
the rain falling on the sunshine...”
― Frances Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden
Whether you are a Lark or an Owl, we all need life-enhancing, refreshing, quality sleep. Something happens during the restful rhythms of our deepest sleep cycles that somehow deals with the issues of day and goes some way to restore balance to mind, body and spirit. Good quality sleep is fundamentally connected to our ability to live and function to our best ability in the day – at work and with our families. We short-change sleep at our peril.
How awake are you?
It’s still not too late to start a seasonal health-check and to make some Seasonal Resolutions – why not start right now? First, have a really good sleep… then go, step outside and discover the wide-awake new life of Spring!
